The narrator is an enigma, and it is left to the reader to decide who is telling the story. Tommie is hitting that awkward tween stage where every question is answered with a shrug. It makes me behave a little erratically, right? What disturbed me more, is that there were times where I found myself relating to Lamb. A troubled “successful” lawyer sort of kidnaps an 11 year old girl and takes her to a mountain cabin hideaway. Both Dave and Tommie are living lives of quiet desperation, and Nadzam has a gift for using landscape description as the expression of their hopelessness.
Lamb is a remarkable debut, by a writer to watch. I do know other people—and recognize in myself—a capacity for self-delusion that can make almost any horrible thing seem like a good idea, perhaps even divinely inspired. The book opens with: While initially his contact with Tom, the young girl, seems like a desperate man looking to connect in the worst of places, as the two of them spend time together, and at the cabin, Lamb starts to come unhinged.
It was utterly genius because the purpose it movle was to truly illustrate the manipulative nature of child predators. Love in the Antropocene.

Never work with children or animals, the Hollywood saying goes. He lies to everyone- his former wife, his boss, the younger woman, the child he meets, and ultimately, himself. David Lamb behaves badly at times, and yet, there is a sympathetic quality about him. Daniel, whose father has recently died, is played by Ross Partridge Baghead.
After his partner encourages him to take some time off to cool an affair he has going with a subordinate, Lamb encounters an year-old girl and decides to take her along on his vacation. The idyllic mountain pastures Dave promotes are filled with cow patties, broken fences, a shortage of indoor heat and suspicious neighbors. Both Tommy and Lamb are characters who linger with the reader, and I found myself caring deeply for Tommy, whose eagerness and vulnerability soar off the page.

Dave told Tommie that his name was Gary. Wow, this book took me by surprise. He tells her this might look like a kidnapping due to their age differences so she can leave at any time. And Nadzam’s prose is just gorgeous–she writes about people and skies and mountains and landscapes with incredible precision and appreciation of beauty.

We wonder what is in store for this girl and whether—as she frolics through wide-open fields—she will have the bonie to realize she shouldn’t be with this man. However, months have passed, and this sweet, ugly child became beautiful in this old man’s eyes.
What helps us grow and stretches us? I had to take a break at some point from the disturbing content. And who is telling the story? That is what makes it a five star read.

In Julyit was announced that Ross Partridge would be directing, starring, and writing the film, from Bonnie Nadzam’s novel Lambwith Mel Eslyn and Taylor Williams producing, with Jennifer Lafleur co-producing.
The novel is so well-crafted and so utterly compelling you fear you have reached the zenith in the art of story-telling. You must be a registered user to use the IMDb rating plugin. Tommie skips school to spend time with this man, and he finds comfort in being able to inject some sort of good to this neglected girl with the dead end life ahead of her.
David Lamb is not your traditional pedophile; he wants something far more dangerous from Tommie.
